Do You Understand TV Shows and Movies Clearly with APD?
No. I don't.
Here's my problem.
With Auditory Processing Disorder, I find it very difficult to focus on both the on screen action while simultaneously processing everything each character is saying. Plus, there are implications and inferences from what each just character said that I need to process in real-time too. Then, I must process the inferences and implications from on screen images & use of imagery in real-time. Needless to say, I miss a lot of what an average person naturally understands instantly.
Some of the best inventions ever made were the VHS and now the DVR/TiVo. I can replay anything I've missed plus watch entire shows over and over to get everything I missed the previous time(s). How sweet is that!
Do I use closed-captioning? Is it helpful with Auditory Processing Disorder?
YES. There are times where I use the "closed-captioning" option to see the words on the TV screen. This makes following the lines and story so much easier. However, the drawback to this is that I focus so much on the words on the screen, that I sometimes then miss the action in the background.
A quick story.
When I was younger, my parents used to take me to see the same movie more than once. I vividly remember seeing Star Wars (Episode IV) several times.
Why did I have to see the same movie over and over again?
Because I could not follow both the story and the on screen action all in one sitting. Processing that much visual and auditory information simultaneously was overwhelming to me. I would have to go back to the movie theater multiple times to fully process everything that I needed to in order to appreciate a movie.
